I expect to have special custom versions for:
- Business associations. Chambers of commerce, trade associations, where a business is the primary member and the business will get added value from advertising exposure.
- Professional and Civic Groups. Rotary, Kiwanis, Civitan, sororities, fraternities, where an individual is the primary member.
- Churches. A protected members-only directory shares names, addresses, and phones with members, faster and less costly than printed directories. An unprotected business directory can share the business connection of those members who choose to be listed, offering service to members and providing additional promotion value as well.
- Schools and Alumni Associations. A protected students and faculty members-only directory shares names, addresses, and phones with members, faster and less costly than printed directories, and instantly up-to-date. For alumni associations, an unprotected business directory can share the business connection of those members who choose to be listed, offering service to members and providing additional promotion value as well.
- Clubs and Organizations. Special interest clubs, including garden clubs, square dance clubs, camera clubs, and thousands of other special interests all have a need for a directory, and an online directory makes a logical choice. It saves money compared to printing and paper, is better on the environment, can be instantly up-to-date, and members edit their own information.
Here's an example
National Speakers Association-Arizona has been using the Member Directory software since 2003. We just updated them to version 3.0. This enabled them to add the Featured Member to their home page. Every day, the computer chooses another member from those who are qualified to feature on the home page. (In their case, qualified means they have to be a Professional Member, have uploaded descriptive copy and promo copy to the website, and have uploaded a photo. Each morning the software picks another member from those qualified until it has worked through the entire membership, then starts over. (The choice is random, but no one gets left out.) The software also sends an email each morning to the featured member telling them they were chosen that day. And it keeps track of who was chosen so a special "Featured Members" page can be included listing each featured member and the date they were featured. (NSA-AZ isn't using that page just yet, waiting until there are 20 or so in the list.)
And the magic... it's so easy!
Have a look at the little video on the front of the Administrator Manual. It shows how easy it is to set things up. By the way, it's actually easier now than it was when I made that video a few months ago.
But there's more, because the system is highly configurable so you can have different directories for the Silver, Gold, and Platinum members. Directory lists by level. Different numbers of results per page. (Yes, if you work at it, you can make it complicated! But it doesn't have to be complicated! Watch that video!)

How Does This Compare to Other Plugins?
There are free plugins that list members. But those are basic listings. No one else gives you as much control over listings... and gives members control over their own listings, so they can join, update there information, and have a complete web page, directory listing, and search capability in minutes.
